Kabul: At least 20 people have been killed in a suicide bomb attack on a wedding in the north, including a well-known commander and member of parliament, Ahmad Khan Samangani, said authorities in Afghanistan.

The attack took place in Aybak, the capital of Samangan province.

Amongst those who were killed included the provincial chief of intelligence and an Afghan National Army division commander.

Dozens more reported to be injured.

Officials were trying to make available other details as soon as possible.

Conflict between the Taliban -- who are mostly Pashtun -- and members of other ethnic groups is nothing new.

However, the Afghan government needs minority groups -- loosely known as the  Northern Alliance -- to back efforts to reconcile with the Taliban.

Notably, the attack comes a day after a prominent female Afghan politician was killed in a bomb attack in eastern Laghman province.
